How to Manage Your Kitchen Space

Kitchen space management is very important no matter where you are. If you happen to live in an apartment in a crowded city with a rather modest kitchen area, and are in the habit of moving from one place to another at whirlwind speed, then this is an absolute necessity. You do not necessarily have to hire professional help to plan your kitchen for space management. Just follow a few simple rules and you can make the optimum use of a limited space.

A kitchen typically houses some of the most important household items – like the washer, the drier, the mixer and many such appliances. At any given day, there are more appliances in your kitchen than the rest of your home put together. So, naturally, it does become an attractive place for the rest of the family or even visiting guests to hang around. The first principle is that you have to control it. The reason is simple, if your kitchen becomes cluttered; it is you who will have to face the problems of using it efficiently. Lay down some ground rules and train your family to follow them.

Try to keep your kitchen free from intervention during the time you prepare the food, and under no circumstance should there be more than two people in your kitchen at a time. It will give you the required space to work with. Secondly, take care that everything is clean and tidy. Even an open door of a cupboard can take up necessary space in a small kitchen. So, it must be closed immediately. Clean up the mess immediately after food preparation. A clean kitchen looks and feels more spacious than an untidy one.
If possible, try to shift some of the kitchen appliances to a basement if you have one, and fetch them only when needed. It will have two advantages: first, it will give you some extra space to work with, and secondly, it will divert unnecessary attention from your kitchen – both extremely desirous if you have to manage with a small kitchen.

Many people have more items than they need. My rule of thumb is that if you aren’t going to use it within 1 week, then get rid of it. This can be a great opportunity to sell some items and buy high quality items to replace them. Creating space doesn’t have to be complicated but it does involve a bit of thinking.
